Unity embodies a significant political statement made at the height of the apartheid government oppression of South African peoples. It implicitly contravened the laws of the time that expressly denied any right to intimate relationships across what was refered to as the colour-bar. Aswell Rowe did much more than simply paint a political statement. He hosted inter-racial cross cultural spiritual healing sessions at his own home after dark every friday. These were directly aimed at generating a sense of understanding and association across the colour-bar amongst the participants powered by the common element of compassion for the sick and ailing. This was an activity that brought the potential of serious penalty were the government to be made aware of it. Aswell facilitated these sessions of spiritual and cultural healing for many years.
